Workers at Amazon's UK warehouses are set to strike again.
On July 8, UK time , the British trade union GMB announced to the public that nearly 900 Amazon workers at the Coventry warehouse in the UK will go on strike for three days, and the strike will be held from July 11 to 13 , yes, during Amazon Prime Day. During these three days, the strike will last for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon.
"The Coventry GMB will make it clear time and again that this fight will not end until we get £15 ($19.25) an hour and union rights," GMB senior organizer Rachel Fagan said in a statement. Recently, Amazon raised its employees' hourly wages, with a minimum starting wage of £11 to £12 per hour (depending on the location), but this figure obviously did not meet the employees' requirements.
However, the company told the media that although the strike took place during Prime Day, it was not expected to affect Prime Day deliveries because the Coventry warehouse only receives goods from suppliers and distributes them to other Amazon facilities.
The latest strike at the warehouse was reportedly from June 12 to 14. Workers had previously held their first strike in January, followed by seven-day strikes in February and March. In addition, the union told the public last month that workers at the Coventry warehouse had voted to strike for another six months.
In addition to Amazon warehouse workers, strikes have been held in many industries in the UK in recent months, including nurses, teachers and transport workers , all of whom want to increase their income to cope with rising inflationary pressures. Obviously, this is a long-term struggle around pensions, layoffs and working conditions.
In addition, according to JPMorgan Chase's estimates, Amazon expects to generate approximately $7 billion in revenue from this Prime Day sales , a 12% increase from the Prime Membership Day revenue disclosed in the third quarter of last year . Amazon PrimeDay strike |
