Sign up and get $10, Amazon's promotion of hand-swipe payment continues to be questioned

Last September, Amazon launched Amazon One. This is a biometric recognition system similar to Alipay's facial payment, which can provide identity recognition services to some extent. Users only need to put their hands on the scanner, and the scanner will recognize the user's identity information based on lines, textures and other features.

Currently, Amazon has expanded the service to 53 offline retail locations in New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Texas . Users can use the service at Amazon Go convenience stores, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Books, Amazon 4-star stores and other places.

It is reported that users can register for Amazon One by binding their credit card and mobile phone number with their palm print . In addition, they need to bind their Amazon account with Amazon One. After that, users can complete purchases and other activities by scanning their palm prints.

When it comes to user privacy, information security is particularly important

Of course, not everyone wants to provide their biometric information to Amazon, and $10 won't buy off consumers who are skeptical about the security of their information.

Reuben Binns, a scholar at Oxford University, said in an interview: "The advantage of a palm print is that it is always on you, but this is also a disadvantage. You can never change your palm print like you can change your password or other identity markers . "

Many people are disgusted by the collection of user information , especially by large companies like Amazon . The company has been controversial in the past for selling facial recognition algorithms and forcing the promotion of home network surveillance cameras connected to the police .

Of course, Amazon is also aware of the information security issues brought about by this business. In order to reduce user concerns, Amazon said it will protect palm print data through encryption, isolated storage and other means. Amazon also promised to separate palm print data from other user data and not use it for other commercial activities.

Amazon also stated that if a user cancels their Amazon account or has not used the palm print scanning service for more than two years, Amazon will delete the relevant user data from the database.

During the pandemic, contactless payment is indeed a business with practical significance launched by Amazon. Like Alipay facial recognition, it will bring great convenience to users, but the premise of all this is to do a good job in protecting user privacy. I believe that when users have enough trust, it will receive widespread support even without the $10 reward.
