Unable to bear it! USPS, the US logistics giant, plans to lay off at least 50,000 employees

The latest news is that the US logistics giant USPS plans to lay off at least 50,000 employees in the next few years , mainly to achieve "break-even".

Recently, Louis DeJoy, head of USPS , outlined his layoff plan to the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. He said that the company must reduce its workforce by 50,000 to break even. However, current employees do not need to panic too much, because 200,000 people will leave the company due to retirement in the next 10 years.

The USPS has continued to grow its workforce over the past few years , with the number of employees reaching 517,000 at the end of 2021 , the highest number since 2012. At the end of last year, the USPS also employed approximately 136,000 non-regular workers.

DeJoy also explained his plan to streamline the company, closing 150 USPS satellite plants over the next four years and replacing them with fewer, more efficient large distribution centers.

In addition, DeJoy said he does not foresee a large-scale shutdown of USPS infrastructure , but hopes to improve the efficiency of package delivery .

The USPS is currently trying to electrify much of its delivery fleet, but DeJoy acknowledged that this is difficult to achieve due to the current shortage of commercial electric vehicles .

In March , the USPS ordered 50,000 delivery vehicles from Oshkosh Defense , at least 50% of which will be electric.

Dave Partenheimer , public relations director of USPS , said that normal layoffs can improve the company's operational efficiency and gain additional growth expectations.

Since the beginning of this year, affected by high inflation and concerns about economic recession, many large technology companies have begun to lay off employees.

Amazon's direct workforce fell by 99,000 from the first quarter to the second .

On July 26, Shopify announced a massive layoff of 1,000 employees, accounting for 10% of its total global workforce.

GXO Logistics, a leading global contract logistics company, recently announced that it will close a warehouse in Wisconsin and lay off 144 employees.

In addition, Apple also announced that it will slow down recruitment.

The current market has an increasingly strong premonition that the US economy will enter a recession. For major companies, if they want to survive in the market in the long run, they must adjust their operating strategies in a timely manner.
