Amazon accounts for a quarter of the UK market

Due to the epidemic, physical activities have been restricted, and people have to purchase daily necessities online. Many small and medium-sized sellers have also begun to try to sell online, and Amazon, a global platform, has become their first choice. According to data from e-commerce consulting firm Wunderman Thompson Commerce, 27% of all online spending in the UK comes from Amazon.

The change in shopping methods is both an opportunity and a challenge for small and medium-sized sellers. Many sellers have gone from the adaptation stage to the current booming stage, and said that the e-commerce channel can make their products known to more people, while not affecting offline sales after the end of the epidemic. The combination of the two is the best option.

Data released by Amazon on July 7 showed that the number of small and medium-sized enterprises on the UK site reached more than 65,000. In 2020, the number of products sold by small and medium-sized enterprises on Amazon increased from 550 million in 2019 to 750 million, equivalent to an average of more than 1,500 products per minute, and export sales on Amazon also exceeded 3.5 billion pounds, a year-on-year increase of 20%.

At the same time, it has also driven the development of related industries, created more employment opportunities, and provided about 175,000 jobs.

Consumers said, "Even if physical stores reopen, online shopping will still be a very important part of our lives." When choosing between various e-commerce platforms, they will mainly shop online through Amazon.

Although restaurants are slowly opening, people are still willing to buy food-related items online. Compared with last year, e-commerce delivery of food such as meal kits has increased by 45%. Overall, the categories with relatively high sales are home furnishing, health care, toys, clothing and beauty.

The epidemic has driven the booming development of global e-commerce, and people's shopping concepts are also changing. The director of Wunderman Thompson Commerce also said: "E-commerce can no longer be regarded as a supplementary sales channel. Consumer behavior shows that online shopping will become the main channel for future retail purchases."

It seems that even after the epidemic is over, the UK's e-commerce market will still maintain a steady development trend.
