What is Barnes & Noble? Barnes & Noble Review, Features

Barnes & Noble is the largest retail bookstore chain in the United States. It is famous for its large physical retail bookstores, mainly selling books, music products, software, magazines, printed materials and related products. It is now the second largest online bookstore and the fastest growing online book sales bookstore.

About Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble has a history of more than 130 years. It was founded by Charles Barnes in his home in Illinois in 1873. It was established as a limited liability company in Delaware in December 1986. Barnes & Noble was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1993. The current chairman is Leonard Lee. He also owns several other private enterprises, including the largest university bookstore chain in the United States, Barnes & Noble University Bookstore, which serves more than 400 colleges and universities across the country. If the above private enterprises are included, Barnes & Noble and its related enterprises have more than 2,400 retail stores and more than 80,000 employees.

  • The bookstore divides books into seven categories according to different markets and sales channels: adult books, youth books, university editions, mass market books, direct mail sales, and science and business books. If readers want to buy the books they want, they can buy them quickly and conveniently according to the categories. If you don't want to buy books and just want to browse around, you can "walk in the garden" accompanied by elegant and beautiful music. If you want to read and relax, or want to get a higher level of enjoyment, then go to the corner of the bookstore - the coffee shop.
  • The coffee shop is usually located outside the reading room. Readers there sip the fragrant coffee and turn the pages one by one, seemingly forgetting the outside world. On weekend evenings, a local small band will set up in the coffee shop and perform for free. Members of spontaneous reading clubs often gather here at fixed times, and people who love reading can naturally learn about good books through communication.
  • The other corner of the bookstore is a veritable "corner". Readers are quietly selecting and searching for the books they want, without the noisy and crowded scenes in China. There are leisure seats here, where women, children and the elderly each hold a book and bury their heads in reading, leisurely and silent. There is a beverage counter not far from the hall, where readers can buy various beverages according to their needs, which is very convenient and comfortable. What surprised me most was that the reader reading table here is so well designed and arranged. Each person has a seat next to the reading table, and each seat is equipped with a lamp. It is a real pleasure for readers to read here. Thinking of the discussion in Beijing a few years ago about "should readers be allowed to read in bookstores", "bookstores are not libraries" sounds quite reasonable, but now seeing the attitude of Barnes & Noble towards readers, I know that we are still far from doing well.

Barnes & Noble Business Philosophy

Barnes & Noble CEO Stephen Riggio is by no means the first bookseller to open a super bookstore, but he is undoubtedly the most successful one. Riggio is known as the "Ted Turner of the bookstore industry." He believes that "a bookstore is a stage, and selling books is like a theater. People go to bookstores not only to choose their favorite works, but also for leisure and entertainment." It is with this marketing concept that Riggio has made his Barnes & Noble one of the largest bookstores in the world. Riggio has always believed that being close to readers is the fundamental principle of bookstore operations. He often says, "Don't think that successful people are all extraordinary people. In fact, as long as you pay close attention to the needs of your customers, everyone can do better."
