101% growth! Argentina's e-commerce during the pandemic

According to the latest data released by the Argentine Chamber of E-Commerce CACE (Cámara Argentina de Comercio Electrónico) , Argentina's e-commerce business grew by 101% in the first half of 2021 compared with the same period last year.

The mid-year report mentioned that Argentina generated 80.3 million online orders and sold more than 120 million products in the first half of the year , representing its fastest e-commerce growth ever (up 47% from the same period in 2020 ) .

CACE mentioned in its report that in the first half of this year, Argentine e-commerce companies issued invoices of 631.788 billion pesos , an increase of 101% over the same period in 2020.

Among them, the top five categories of e-commerce sales in Argentina in the first half of this year were : food and beverages , clothing ( excluding sportswear) , household appliances, furniture and garden supplies , cleaning items , and automobile and motorcycle accessories.

Mobile devices are the primary way most people search ( 74%) and purchase (54%) , and credit cards remain the primary payment method for users: 76% of purchases are paid by credit card .

According to statistics, 64% of shopping is done through third-party payment platforms ( 59% in mid-2020), 12% is done through gateways , the proportion of cash payments remains stable at 10%, while the proportion of debit cards and virtual e-wallets ( 5%) has increased slightly .

In terms of logistics, home delivery continues to lead with a share of 64% ( 60% in mid-2020), while pickup at the point of sale remains stable at 33% ( the same as in mid- 2020 ).

It is worth noting that 16% of Argentines shopped online for the first time during the epidemic , and the online shopping group was mainly young people ( 51% of people aged between 18 and 34 ). 35% of Argentines said they bought more than half of their daily consumer goods online , while before the epidemic , this figure was only 15% .

This reflects that we are in an increasingly mature and reliable sector, with more and more Argentines choosing to shop online and expressing great satisfaction with their online shopping experience , said Gustavo Sambucetti, director general of CACE, when presenting the report .

In addition, it is understood that the shopping focus of Argentine consumers has also changed. Last year, most people bought basic necessities for home use . Now , as the epidemic situation improves, people are more inclined to buy products related to leisure and entertainment . Sellers in related markets can also consider investing more in such products.
