With the rise of platforms such as SHEIN, Temu, and Amazon, the Australian e-commerce market is booming. According to an e-commerce analysis released by GlobalData, the local e-commerce market is expected to grow by 9.3% this year to 81.9 billion Australian dollars (about 54 billion U.S. dollars), and is expected to reach 109.7 billion Australian dollars (about 72.3 billion U.S. dollars) in 2028.
Pattern's "2024 Australian Consumer Online Shopping Trends Report" mentioned that 93% of Australian consumers had shopped on e-commerce platforms last year. Among these consumers, 25% had used Temu and 21% had used SHEIN. The report also mentioned that this year 94% of consumers plan to shop on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Temu, and SHEIN in the next year .
Roy Morgan 's research seems to back that up, with Amazon, SHEIN and Temu driving a 12 per cent increase in online spending in Australia in the six months to March this year (compared to the six months before).
Data shows that in the year ending March 2024, Australia's non-food online consumption was about $60 billion. Although the overall growth of the retail market remained stable, online consumption reached $32 billion in the six months ending March 2024, an increase of 12% over the six months ending September 2023. In the same period, offline did not see such growth. Roy Morgan expert Laura Demasi said Amazon's sales increased by 6% year-on-year, and its sales in the six months ending March 2024 increased by 17% compared with the previous six months. Amazon also accounts for nearly one-tenth of Australia's total online retail sales.
The increasing pressure of life has also allowed SHEIN and Temu to take advantage of the situation in Australia. Both platforms are well-known locally for their affordable home products, electronics and clothing.
According to Roy Morgan data, SHEIN and Temu have an average of 2 million local users per month. Temu has as many customers in Australia as large local retail brands, and its sales are expected to reach US$1.3 billion.
There are also reports that according to information provided by SHEIN to local regulators, the company's revenue in Australia reached US$978.9 million last year, with profits increasing by 307.7%.
Roy Morgan 's research also found that Australian consumers who shop at Temu and SHEIN are also diverse, ranging from "bargain hunters on a budget" to young parents, ordinary Australian families and retired Australians. Roy Morgan CEO Levine said he believed SHEIN and Temu could have a lasting influence in Australia.
In fact, in addition to SHEIN and Tmeu, AliExpress also ranks among the top cross-border e-commerce platforms in Australia. It is reported that AliExpress will increase its platform promotion efforts in Australia in the future and will also introduce brands and products from other regions such as Southeast Asia and Europe into the Australian e-commerce market.
