It is understood that Amazon believes that these cartoon character toys may cause "harm" to children, even though these toys do not wear overly revealing clothes or pose in provocative ways.
Chuck Gaffney is a merchant who specializes in selling anime figures. In addition to his own website, he also has e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and eBay. According to Gaffney, he recently received a notice from Amazon stating that several figures sold in his store had been found to violate platform regulations and have been removed from the shelves. According to a screenshot posted by Gaffney on Twitter, the notice reads: Amazon does not allow the sale of products that "exploit children" or depict children or characters that resemble children in a sexually suggestive manner.
After investigation, it was found that the figures removed from Amazon were all women from Japanese anime, and they all wore clothes that completely covered their bodies: pleated skirts and long-sleeved uniforms, or long skirts and shirts.
Gaffney pointed out that there are other toys with more revealing clothing on the Amazon platform, but it is hard to understand why his own serious figures were taken off the shelves.
In fact, as early as 2020, Gaffney had exposed this problem online. At that time, Amazon also removed the products sold in his store for the same reason, and froze the store for several years. During this period, Amazon kept notifying him to rectify the non-compliant listings in the store.
Gaffney said in an interview earlier: "I have contacted Amazon officials by email many times about this matter, but I have not received any response at all. I posted a message on Twitter and only received a message and no response."
"I know that every Amazon seller may encounter one thing or another that may lead to the suspension of the store, but I haven't done anything wrong. Do I have to accept this situation?"
This situation is not uncommon. As early as 2018, a bug in the Kindle store caused the products of many best-selling sellers to be judged as pornographic books and removed from the shelves. In addition to Amazon, similar incidents have occurred on other social media platforms. Some user posts were also identified as sensitive information by detection tools and deleted, but the actual situation is not the case.
