For cross-border people, the recent period can be described as a "tumultuous autumn" . Inventory restrictions, address verification, etc. have made many sellers exhausted. One wave has not yet subsided, and another wave has risen. Recently, logistics issues have once again been pushed to the forefront!
The warehouses of UK DPD, US FTW1, UK BHX4, German DTM2, WRO5 and French CGD7 are overwhelmed, shipping routes are undercapacity and containers are in short supply. A large number of sellers are facing delayed customs clearance or rejection of their goods.
39% of cargo was affected, and the rate of abandoned containers continued to rise
Port congestion has caused disruptions in the logistics supply chain. Container liner schedules have been delayed again and again, and the on-time rate has dropped from over 70% on weekdays to 20%. The longest time that container cargo has been stranded at the terminal has reached two months!
In addition, the phenomenon of "abandoned containers" is particularly serious. In April, the rate of container abandonment at some ports even exceeded 64%, and the rate of container abandonment by shipping companies was as high as 56%.
Data from supply chain platform operator Project44 showed that the number of container abandonments at major container ports continued to increase in April, affecting about 39% of shipments.
The study found that the shipping company with the highest rate of container abandonment in April was CMA CGM, reaching 56%, an increase of 7% over the same period last year. In addition, its subsidiary in Asia-Oceania, Australian National Line (ANL), also had a container abandonment rate of 54%, an increase of 30% year-on-year.
It is worth mentioning that 2M Alliance partners MSC and Maersk performed relatively well, with container abandonment rates of only 28% and 34% respectively.
Big strike! North American ports are completely paralyzed
Port truck drivers in California (Los Angeles and Long Beach Ports) began a strike against ULH, the largest freight company in Southern California , affecting traffic at seven port terminals.
Amazon Prime Day is coming soon, and a large number of sellers are racing against time to prepare goods. However, as this incident continues to ferment, the sellers' preparation cycle can only be extended, and they can only swallow their anger!
Ships cannot unload cargo, and trucks can only wait in line, unable to enter or leave. Truck drivers cannot pick up containers on time, and there is no guarantee that the containers will be transported back to the cargo yard within 5-7 days. In one word, it is jammed!
What is even more heartbreaking for some sellers is that demurrage and container detention fees must all be borne by the sellers themselves. The demurrage fees at some ports can reach 300% of the basic freight!
The head of a logistics company said that in the past 26 years, he had never seen such high shipping costs and the situation had never been so tense.
The epidemic is not over yet, and incidents such as warehouse explosions, ship blockages, and strikes have occurred one after another, which has had a huge impact on the shipping market. Sellers who have shipping plans in the near future must also be mentally prepared and take countermeasures in advance to avoid losses. North America port |
