Amazon had previously proposed to increase the wages of workers at the Coventry warehouse by another 50 pence, but the workers considered this increase an "insult" to themselves and said they would prepare for a new round of strikes.
Now, a new strike schedule has been arranged, with another six days of strikes in April! In addition, the GMB union is also preparing to mobilize employees from several other Amazon warehouses in the UK to join the strike.
Currently, it is expected that more than 560 Amazon workers will join a new round of strikes, first from April 16 to 18, and then from April 21 to 23 , a total of six days.
Previously, the number of people participating in the strike was less than 300, but this time the number is expected to double, which may pose some substantial threat to Amazon. According to Amanda Guerin, an organizer from the GMB union, "Momentum for strike action is growing and it is likely that our workers will cause some 'little trouble' at Amazon this summer."
"The latest decision to strike for six days sends a clear signal that workers will not give up unless they get satisfactory results. I hope Amazon's management can come up with a convincing solution."
Amanda Guerin also called on Amazon's senior management to "take the matter seriously" and sit down to negotiate with the GMB union as soon as possible to determine the final pay increase plan.
However, Amazon is unwilling to recognise the union and has refused to negotiate with it. Amazon pointed out that the employees involved in the Coventry warehouse dispute account for less than 1% of its total UK workforce .
An Amazon spokesperson said: "Compensation is competitive in the industry and we have increased our salaries several times over the past few years."
It is understood that the dispute between the Coventry warehouse and Amazon began with an informal strike last summer when employees were told they would receive a 50p per hour pay increase, but the workers apparently felt that this was completely disproportionate to their efforts.
After many failed attempts at communication, the strike action broke out earlier this year. In fact, from an outsider's perspective, this situation was caused entirely by the lack of empathy between the workers and the company. Both sides believed that they were right, resulting in a stalemate.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced it would close three warehouses in the UK, but would build two new ones, one of which would be in Peddymore, West Midlands, and would create 1,400 jobs.
If the conflict between Amazon and its employees is not resolved in a timely manner, more and more workers may join in, and some sellers may also be affected. Amazon strike |
