eBay successfully taps into Southeast Asia’s e-commerce potential

As one of the fastest growing regions in the world, the Southeast Asian economy is vital to the global economy.

Today, 70% of Southeast Asians have achieved Internet freedom, and almost everyone is equipped with a smartphone, which provides a solid foundation for the booming e-commerce industry.

In order to record the leapfrog growth achieved by SMEs in Southeast Asia on eBay, the platform released a Southeast Asian SME trade report, which records the performance of SMEs in six Southeast Asian countries on the eBay platform in 2020.

The products sold by these companies are different, but they have one thing in common: these sellers target consumers around the world.

Data shows that in these six Southeast Asian countries, only 11% of traditional merchants have export businesses. For sellers who have opened stores on the eBay platform, the figure is 99% . Each eBay seller can export to 25 countries on average.

A seller from the Philippines said: “I started by selling only domestically, and then gradually expanded to the global market. When I first opened the eBay store, I just thought it would be a part-time job, but now the store income has become my main source of income.”

With the support of the eBay platform, these small and medium-sized sellers can access markets that are difficult to enter on their own.

The main exporting countries for Southeast Asian sellers are all on the other side of the world: the United States ranks first, Australia ranks second, and there are also countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada.

Although these countries may seem out of reach for small and medium-sized enterprises in Southeast Asia, with the help of eBay, they have successfully established connections with consumers in these countries.

Being able to reach consumers in developed countries is obviously attractive to merchants in Southeast Asia, 70% of whom are new to eBay.

It is obvious that more and more small and medium-sized sellers in Southeast Asia are considering entering e-commerce platforms such as eBay to seek further development.
