94% of American consumers give up online shopping because they cannot find the product

According to a 2021 survey conducted by Harris Poll and Google Cloud , approximately 94% of American consumers have abandoned online shopping because of irrelevant search results.

In addition to search reasons, there are many other reasons that block online shopping, such as security issues, shipping issues, trying on issues, return issues, etc.

Many consumers lose their enthusiasm and stop buying because of poor product search experience. This phenomenon is called "search abandonment."

In the US alone, retailers miss out on $300 billion in sales each year due to search abandonment .

According to a Google Cloud report, retailers such as Lowes, Fnac Darty and Casas Pernambucanas have already adopted Google Cloud's search solutions to increase sales conversion rates, expand shopping cart size, and improve customer engagement.

When shoppers search for “long black short sleeve and comfy fit dress” on an e-commerce site , they should get accurate results immediately—not multiple refined searches that lead to abandoned shopping journeys.

In addition to search issues, security issues are an important reason why consumers are reluctant to shop on smartphones or tablets. One-third of US consumers surveyed said they would not use smartphones or tablets to shop due to security concerns, while 77% of respondents said they were afraid of their credit card information being hacked.

While online shopping may be more convenient than going to a store, there are still many different reasons that drive shoppers to visit physical stores.

According to PwC’s annual consumer survey, nearly 40% of consumers shop in physical stores at least once a week, while the proportion of online shopping is only 27%.

The study found that 65% of consumers said they shop in-store to avoid shipping costs, while more than 60% said it allows them to get the product immediately. In addition, 61% said they like to try on or see the product in person before buying.

The survey also found that shoppers prefer shopping in physical stores because they are more likely to support local businesses and it is easier to return items purchased in physical stores.

The above are all reasons that prevent consumers from shopping online. If e-commerce platforms want to reach more users, they need to optimize the questions raised by consumers one by one, dispel consumers' doubts, and thus promote the development of online shopping.
