Frequent thefts, USPS strengthens cargo protection

Frequent thefts, USPS strengthens cargo protection

In recent weeks, there has been an increase in cargo theft cases in the United States. In addition to railway thefts, thefts committed by employees of local logistics companies have also attracted public attention.

In December 2021 , a former Massachusetts postman was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay a $7,500 fine and $175 in restitution for stealing mail containing gift cards and cash. Two weeks ago, a contract employee in Florida was arrested on suspicion of "postal employee theft of mail."

In this regard, the United States Postal Service ( USPS ) is naturally aware of the seriousness of the problem. Although the USPS has issued similar warnings at related events held in the second half of 2021 , the USPS recently reiterated to its employees the importance of protecting mail.

USPS believes that its employees have a responsibility to protect the sanctity of mail . When customers send and receive mail through USPS, they believe that their mail will be respected and valued . However, damaging, delaying, tampering with or destroying mail in any form violates the sanctity of mail and reduces the public's trust in the postal service.

It is understood that this warning from the U.S. Postal Service has now appeared on the employee communication link.

As local residents spend more time at home, the number of online shopping times and the amount of goods purchased by many consumers continue to increase, leading to an increase in cargo transportation volume through various channels, and criminals have just targeted these shipments.

In addition to the US Postal Service, similar incidents have also occurred on major US e-commerce platforms. Amazon has had internal employees steal goods. In 2019, four employees at Amazon's Delaware warehouse were accused of colluding with a theft gang to steal Apple products, which also caused heated discussions at the time.

In response to the increase in thefts, various e-commerce platforms and logistics companies have also taken relevant measures. USPS said that employees who violate the sanctity of mail may be reprimanded or fired and may face federal criminal charges in the United States .
