Traffic of multiple e-commerce platforms in Southeast Asia declined, with the largest drop exceeding 11%

In terms of total volume, in September this year, the total website traffic of Shopee and Lazada, the two major e-commerce platforms in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore) was 549.5 million, a decrease of 3.9% compared with 571.7 million in August.

Among them, the total website traffic of Shopee's various sites was 401 million, a decrease of 4.6% from the previous month; Lazada's total traffic was less than half of Shopee, only 148.5 million, also a decrease of 1.9% from August.

It is worth mentioning that in the first super promotion in the second half of this year, both Shopee and Lazada delivered impressive results. Among them, Shopee sold more than 45 million items in the first 99 minutes, the number of orders for new sellers on the day of the promotion increased 8 times compared to normal days, and the viewing time of Shopee Live reached 24 million hours. The number of orders for Lazada's furniture and storage categories increased by 1,500% compared to the same period of Lazada's Bday promotion in March this year, and the traffic of cross-border computer internal and external accessories categories increased by 100% compared to the same period of Bday this year. Despite the support of the 9.9 promotion, the traffic of these two platforms did not increase, but declined instead.

In fact, in addition to Shopee and Lazada, traffic on local and other international e-commerce platforms in various countries has also declined.

Let’s first look at Vietnam, where the traffic of local e-commerce platform Tiki dropped from 16.9 million in August to 15.4 million in September, a drop of 8.9%. However, the traffic of Sendo increased from 3.97 million in August to 4.29 million in September, an increase of 8.1%.

In Indonesia, traffic to local e-commerce platform Tokopedia fell by 8%, from 161.9 million in August to 149 million in September. Like Tokopedia, Bukalapak also fell by more than 8%, currently only 28.64 million.

As for the Singapore site, Qoo10 platform traffic dropped from 3.62 million in August to 3.2 million in September, a drop of 11.6%. In addition, Amazon platform traffic dropped from 4.71 million in August to 4.42 million in September, a drop of 6.2%.

In general, except for the increase in traffic of Lazada Philippines and Vietnam sites as well as Sendo site, the traffic of other sites declined, ranging from 3% to 12%.

Although the traffic has declined, the rankings of Shopee and Lazada in the Southeast Asian e-commerce industry have not changed and they are still in the leading position.
