Delta virus to drive online sales boom during US holiday season

Affected by the epidemic, 2020 has become a year of rapid development for the e-commerce industry, and e-commerce platforms have become the first choice for many consumers to shop . With the surge in Delta infection cases, it is expected that this year's holiday shopping season in the United States will usher in a peak like in 2020.

To determine consumers' attitudes toward holiday shopping amid potential health risks, BOXpoll and Morning Consult conducted a weekly consumer survey of more than 2,000 online shoppers in the U.S. The results of the survey indicate that the global spread of the Delta variant virus will drive a sales boom in e-commerce during the holiday season .

According to BOXpoll 's consumer survey results, one - third of respondents indicated that they would start shopping online more often , one-quarter of respondents planned to reduce the frequency of offline shopping , and approximately 41% of respondents planned to increase spending during this holiday shopping season .

The survey also showed that consumers' views on the Delta variant virus are inconsistent among different age groups . Millennials are the most cautious about the Delta variant virus . Affected by the epidemic, nearly one-third of millennials said they would reduce offline shopping, and nearly half of the respondents said they would buy more online . These two proportions have increased by nearly 20% since May, the largest increase among all age groups .

With the spread of the Delta variant virus in the United States, many large American companies have postponed their plans to resume work until 2022 in recent months, making working from home the current mainstream working mode . Under this trend, more consumers will adopt online shopping. At the same time, it is expected that more retailers will start to develop e-commerce businesses .

While the Delta variant virus has driven the boom in the e-commerce industry, it has also brought a number of challenges. Due to the shipping crisis and worker shortages indirectly caused by the epidemic, many large retailers have warned that there may be inventory shortages during the holiday shopping period.

Freight costs have risen and it is difficult to prepare goods. In this case, sellers must prepare in advance, manage inventory well, and seize the opportunity of the second half of the year's peak sales season.
