Net sales of $874 million, record sales for Mattel in the U.S.

Relevant data shows that in the first quarter of 2021, Mattel's net sales were $874 million, up 47% from the same period last year. Reported operating income was $31 million, an increase of $181 million, and adjusted operating income was $28 million, an increase of $161 million. The reported loss per share was $0.33, and earnings per share increased by $0.28, and the adjusted loss per share was $0.10, and earnings per share increased by $0.46.

 

Gross Billings saw a 67% increase in net sales in North America compared to the first quarter of last year, driven by the continued growth of dolls, including Barbie, Fisher-Price, Thomas & Friends, Hot Wheels, animated figures, Mansion Sets, Universe, Jurassic World and plush toys.

 

International net sales increased 30% . Looking at specific segments, total billings in the U.S. Girl segment increased 22%, primarily driven by growth in direct-to-consumer billings, partially offset by declines in proprietary retail channels and the impact of permanent store closures.

 

Reported gross margin increased to 46.8% from 43.0% in the prior year’s first quarter , while adjusted gross margin increased to 47.0% from 43.5%. The increase in reported and adjusted gross margin was primarily due to fixed cost absorption gains associated with the high sales growth in the quarter and savings from the Optimize for Growth initiative, partially offset by higher input costs in cost of goods sold.
