According to foreign media reports, the online second-hand market is growing rapidly, with a growth rate surpassing the traditional clothing market .
According to a survey of 400 US consumers by resale business FloorFound, more than nine in ten ( 92% ) respondents have purchased second-hand goods online in the past. 95% of them would buy branded second-hand goods at a discount .
For big-ticket items , 77% of respondents plan to purchase returned or gently used furniture in the next one to two years. Meanwhile, 89% expect the shopping experience, delivery, and customer support to be the same when buying used furniture as when buying new furniture .
Eight in ten respondents said they want brands to offer more sustainable options, and FloorFound predicts that 50% of furniture brand sales will be resale items in the next five years.
Other interesting findings include: three quarters of respondents ( 75% ) said they would be willing to keep furniture they planned to return until a new buyer was found ; and nearly nine in ten ( 88% ) said they would be willing to try a furniture "trade-in" program, which would allow them to return old items in exchange for credits or discounts .
Meanwhile, a survey conducted by GlobalData for online resale platform ThredUp showed that more than half ( 52%) of consumers are concerned that popular holiday gifts will be more expensive this year, and a third believe that limited inventory will make it difficult to find gifts. As a result, 49% of respondents said they are considering alternative gift purchases this holiday season, such as buying second-hand products .
The study also found that Gen Z respondents are particularly open to secondhand holiday gifts, with 72% willing to accept secondhand gifts, compared to 66% of all respondents . Sustainability is the top reason Gen Z respondents give for buying secondhand holiday gifts ( 64% ) , compared to 54% of all respondents ; the second-top reason is to save money , with 62% of Gen Z respondents willing to buy secondhand gifts to save money.
“If you’re an e-commerce brand that’s not in the resale business, you’re missing out on a great opportunity to meet a new generation of consumers who want to support sustainable brands while finding great products at affordable prices , ” said Chris, CEO of FloorFound .
