$23 million worth of online orders were returned! Clothing is the main category of returns for the Dutch

Recently, research firm Multiscope conducted a large-scale study " E- commerce Aftersales" among more than 3,100 Dutch people and found that by 2020, the Dutch returned nearly $23 million in online shopping orders.

As for the reason, Multiscope said that the main reason for such a large number of returns is that the products or services after purchase did not meet people's expectations.

In total , 7% of online orders were returned in part or in full, according to the report, which equates to nearly $23 million in online refunds over the past year .

Nearly half (46%) of online shoppers in the Netherlands have returned one or more orders in the past year . On average, they have returned nearly four packages each. And, of all online returns, 10% are for transport and accessories .

Among them, clothing is the main category for returns, with even one-third of orders being returned. Clothing , shoes and fashion accessories are listed as the most frequently returned categories, with one-third of them being partially or fully returned.

As a large number of physical retail stores were closed during the pandemic, online orders continued to soar. Thanks to the rapid development of e-commerce, retail sales in 2020 achieved the fastest growth rate since 1994. Therefore, the return rate in 2020 is bound to be higher than the normal level in the past.

Many consumers are concerned about return policies and how returned products are disposed of. According to a survey by Statista, 55% of retailers said that returned goods can no longer be sold as high-quality goods and are either destroyed or recycled. 50% of respondents also said that some slightly damaged goods may be sold as second-hand or on-sale goods.

With so many online returns, the improvement of reverse logistics services is very important for sellers and is also an important criterion for consumers to evaluate sellers.

Sellers need to provide free return services and sufficient return time , and offer consumers comprehensive return services and high-quality products to reduce returns in order to improve their competitiveness and attract more consumers .
