Usage time increased by up to 380%, and these applications are very popular during the epidemic!

According to data released by Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) , the usage rate of applications in all categories has basically increased from March 2020 to February 2021 .


Among them, the usage time of financial applications increased by 63%, followed by social media applications ( +25%) , lifestyle applications ( +19%) , video applications ( +22%) and game applications (+6%). It is worth noting that only the usage of sports applications decreased by 32%.


 

Gen Z spent 102% more time on financial apps . Robinhood and Square were the top apps   Apps like Cash stood out , with total usage time increasing by 186% and 183% , respectively .


Additionally , people struggling with financial issues due to COVID-19 are increasingly using food stamp apps. For example , FRESH EBT usage has increased by 152%.

 


Gen Z is also using dining and shopping apps more ( + 50%) , with DoorDash and Uber Eats usage increasing by 166% and 121%, respectively.


During the epidemic , the time users spent on social media apps increased by 25%, with daily usage exceeding one hour, accounting for the largest proportion of the time users spent on mobile phones every day .


When it comes to video apps, more U.S. users are spending more time on them , especially Gen Z (44%) and Baby Boomers (up 10%).


Among them, the TikTok application has grown most significantly , with the time users spend on videos increasing almost fourfold ( 380%) . Nextdoor (a community social networking application) and Twitter’s total usage also increased by 53% and 37% respectively .

 

In addition to the above applications, consumers are also using shopping applications more. According to a report by App Annie, global consumers spent 82 billion hours on shopping applications in 2020, an increase of 30% from 2019.


In the previous " 2021 Mobile Market Status" report, App Annie also called 2020 the largest mobile shopping year to date. Data showed that from November 1 to December 9 alone, spending in the US mobile market reached US$53.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 55%.


It is undeniable that consumers spend more time on mobile devices, and sellers should also pay more attention to marketing on mobile device channels, such as launching applications.
