It would be impossible to tell the story of Walgreens Drugstore without telling the story of Charles R. Walgreen, Sr., the man who started it all. Born near Galesburg, Illinois, Walgreen’s family later moved to Dickson, Illinois—a small town 60 miles north of his birthplace—when his father, a farmer-turned-businessman, saw the great business potential of the Rock River Valley. It was here that the 16-year-old Walgreen first worked in a drugstore, though it was far from a positive experience. Working at Horton’s drugstore ($4 a week) was a job he took only because of an accident that prevented him from playing sports. While working at a local shoe factory, Walgreen accidentally severed the upper joint of his middle finger, ending his athletic competition. If not for that accident, Walgreen might never have become a pharmacist, business owner, and highly successful entrepreneur. Ironically, his initial experience working at Horton was a failure in itself. Walgreen left after just a year and a half on the job.
