It’s hard to find a job! Amazon’s operational demand has dropped by 60% this year

Currently, the demand for employees in enterprises has shrunk significantly, while the number of job seekers has reached an unprecedented high, and job hopping has become an adventure.

In 2022, Amazon's operational recruitment volume will drop by 60%

Since last year, many cross-border e-commerce companies in the industry have fallen into a growth bottleneck. At the same time, many operators said that they could not make money. They had no choice but to change companies, hoping to improve their situation, but the actual situation was surprising.

According to the data from Zhiyouji, based on the recruitment information publicly available on major platforms, in the first four months of this year, corporate demand for Amazon operations fell by 62%, a drop of more than 60%.

Specifically, there were 259 Amazon operations recruitment positions in January this year, a decrease of 89% compared with the same period last year; there were 1.7K positions in February, an increase of 69% over the same period last year; there were 353 positions in March, a decrease of 77% over the same period last year; and there were only 93 positions in April, a decrease of 94% over the same period last year.

In terms of city distribution, Shenzhen has the highest demand for Amazon operations recruitment, with 1,000 positions, accounting for 29.2%, ranking first in the country ; followed by Xiamen with 22.2%, Dongguan with 10.1%, and Guangzhou with 6.4%. But even in Shenzhen, the demand for Amazon operations has dropped by 74% in the first four months of this year.

The editor asked several cross-border e-commerce company bosses. Due to the pessimistic industry situation, most of them currently choose to advance their business conservatively, with little demand for recruitment or no plans to expand recruitment.

Operators in the industry have clearly felt the current severe situation.

Meiluo is an Amazon operator at a Shenzhen cross-border e-commerce company. She said that the company didn't make much money last year, and the situation this year is not very good. Many operators can only get a base salary of 6-8k for a long time. Because of the lack of profit, the staff turnover is very high. Some colleagues changed their careers or returned to their hometowns, but with their experience, most people still want to change companies in the industry.

Meiluo also feels that it is hard. She has interviewed several companies recently, but the results are not satisfactory. "To be honest, it is not easy to find an operation job this year. The market is not good and everyone is eager to get a job. The benefits are similar and the salary is very low." Meiluo has two years of boutique operation experience, but most companies only offer 6.5k-7.5k, and few offer 8k. She also interviewed for independent websites, but the inexperienced personnel only have a base salary of 5k.

Now, she has decided to look for new opportunities while keeping her job.

Another operator also said that job hunting this year is much more tiring than last year. "Last year, during the interviews, offers fell like raindrops, and I could choose freely. I often received calls from my boss, and every time I talked, I was sure to get the job. I was too lazy to answer calls from headhunters. However, this year, it seems that I can't find many companies that are sincere in recruiting people. I had to take the initiative to contact companies and send my resume, but I didn't even read the messages and there was no news. (They) just posted the positions there." He felt anxious.

Compared with the hot recruitment scene last year, the demand for operations in the industry has cooled down significantly this year. In fact, there are companies that are still recruiting, but in most cases, their expectations do not match the actual operations in the market.

Cross-border companies are posting recruitment notices just to "pick up leaks" of excellent operations

At a company in Guangming District, Shenzhen, HR Bai Xue is busy recruiting: "Our company is short of people recently, and there is a great demand for Amazon operations." The salary level for operations has declined this year, but the salary offered by Bai Xue's company has not changed much. "It mainly depends on personal ability. For those with boutique products and more than 1 year of Amazon operations experience, the basic salary range is 7-10k."

However, this year, there are only a few companies that need to increase operations significantly due to optimistic development prospects; there are also companies that need to recruit to fill vacancies due to staff turnover, but the remuneration is relatively average; except for companies that really have hiring needs, some other companies, although they have posted recruitment information, have been questioned by job seekers as "playing tricks".

During the interview process, some operations personnel have gone to great lengths to demonstrate their lifelong learning in the hope of getting a position, but in reality, there is often no follow-up after the interview. Similar situations happen again and again, and job seekers can't help but wonder whether these companies really want to recruit or are just trying to get experience in disguise.

In fact, these companies are probably not interested in ordinary operations, they are waiting for excellent operations talents. One seller said frankly that the company posted recruitment information just to "pick up leaks" and maybe meet an excellent operation.

In addition to being unable to reach a consensus with the recruiting company on capabilities, job seekers may also encounter other situations, such as recruitment information showing a salary of more than 10k, but during the interview they are told that they can only offer 7k; or they don’t want to keep clearing inventory at the original company with a meager income, so they finally successfully switch to a new company, only to find out after joining that company that this company is also clearing inventory!

Operators said that according to the current market situation, no matter which company they go to, they are likely to clear out inventory. "I joined a new company in March and was asked to clear out 3,000 to 4,000 fleece scarves for winter. I was stunned," said one of them. In addition, it is difficult to find a job now, so even if they feel that the current situation is not ideal, many people can only give up for the time being.

The market is saturated, so job-hopping requires caution

After the wave of self-banning, news of layoffs in companies in the industry has been heard from time to time. Last year, Youkeshu reduced its staff by about 1,800 people, and other top and mid-level sellers who were affected also issued layoff notices. After the beginning of this year, news of layoffs in companies of all sizes in the industry has been heard one after another. As many companies continue to downsize, a large number of operating personnel have entered the market.

By now, the supply of operational personnel in the industry is very sufficient, and companies have a lot of room for choice when recruiting. At the same time, due to the large number of competitors, the salary packages offered by recruiting companies have also been reduced.

In 2021 , the average salary for Amazon operations was 10.4K, an increase of 11% over 2020 ; but this year, the average salary for operations was 9.8K, which was the first decline in the salary of this position after rising for several consecutive years. Taking Shenzhen as an example, the average salary for local Amazon operations in 2021 was 11.5K, an increase of 15% over 2020, but as of now, the average monthly salary for local operations has dropped to about 10.5K.

In fact, the difficulty of finding a job in operations had already shown signs at the beginning of the year. In February and March this year, the peak season for job hopping appeared earlier, but it was far less intense than in previous years. Many operations realized that the industry situation was not optimistic, so they gave up the idea of job hopping and turned to seek stability.

At present, the overall environment of cross-border e-commerce seems to be more difficult than in 2021. Geopolitical conflicts, redundant inventory, high freight costs and declining profits have made many companies determined to slim down for the winter, and the demand for employment has naturally been greatly reduced. At the same time, the number of operators seeking jobs in the market has reached an unprecedented high, and the competition is fierce. If you don’t have hard skills, job hopping at this moment is tantamount to a risk for operators.
