Containers that had been docked at ports such as Shanghai and Qingdao caught fire
On April 28, US time , the engine room of the US container ship PRESIDENT EISENHOWER suddenly caught fire while sailing from Los Angeles to San Francisco . AIS ship tracking data showed that the ship had been displayed as "not under command" in the morning of that day and was sailing towards the west coast of Santa Barbara at a speed of about 0.9 knots.
According to a U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson, the fire on PRESIDENT EISENHOWER broke out at around 3 a.m. on April 28. The fire was put out by the crew on board that morning and no one was injured, and there were no reports of marine pollution or cargo damage.
As of April 29, the ship was towed by two tugboats, SHIRLEY C and TERESA BRUSCO, at a speed of about 4.5 knots back to Los Angeles. Although the ship has been towed, it is unknown how long the cargo will have to wait for the next stop, San Francisco .
In addition, according to external network data, PRESIDENT EISENHOWER has called at ports such as Shanghai and Qingdao , which also means that there may be a lot of Chinese goods on board, and relevant sellers should also be prepared for cargo delays.
US-bound ships have recently stopped sailing 67 times
According to CMA CGM, the container ship PEIIDENT EISENHOWER was built in 2005 and flies the US flag. It is one of nine US-flagged container ships in the APL fleet. It has an IMO 9295220, dwt 93558, a capacity of 7471 TEU, a current draft of 12.9 meters, a length overall (LOA) of 300.04 meters and a width of 42.8 meters.
In fact, most of the ship fires are caused by some sellers who conceal dangerous goods and flammable goods for their own benefit, because the shipping price of dangerous goods containers is usually almost twice that of ordinary goods . However, if you are not careful, you will lose more than just the shipping cost.
In addition, there are endless news of logistics delays, such as port congestion, long container waiting time, etc. In the past 9 weeks, there have been 67 suspensions of ships from Asia to North America , including 48 voyages to the West Coast of the United States , 19 voyages to the East Coast of the United States, 15 voyages to Northern Europe, and 10 voyages to the Mediterranean.
Maersk also announced that due to the continued congestion at North American ports, its trans-Pacific routes were seriously delayed. However, the hot demand in the US market still needs to be met, which has led to rising freight rates. The quotations from freight forwarders on WeChat Moments are also unpredictable, and shipping companies have issued warnings of empty sailings.
Air freight prices have also started to rise. The price on the US route has exceeded 80, and the rate on the Northern European route has risen by 450% , which is a bit unexpected. Relevant sellers should be prepared in advance.
If there are sellers who have the ship on board, they need to contact the freight forwarder in time to understand the specific situation of cargo damage and shipping delays, so as to avoid or reduce further losses. Of course, this also reminds the relevant sellers to ask the freight forwarder for the latest status of their goods in time to avoid being caught off guard by unexpected situations.
