The California Senate passed a bill on Wednesday by a vote of 26 to 11 that would limit warehouse employee quotas, according to The New York Times. The bill, which includes prohibitions on production quotas due to employee breaks or bathroom breaks and companies not complying with health and safety laws , is the latest sign of increasing scrutiny of Amazon's labor practices.
The parties also hold different opinions on the content of the bill. Opponents said that if Amazon's quota is limited, other links will need to increase manpower to maintain the original balance under the same conditions. Supporters said that the production quota is unreasonable and infringes on workers' rights. As for the passage of the bill, some people pointed out that the high injury rate of Amazon warehouse employees is one of the reasons.
When the bill was first introduced, some lawmakers said that Amazon was risking its employees to speed up the delivery of goods, which was unreasonable. According to reports, the governor of California did not make it clear whether he would sign the bill before the vote, but mentioned that some staff members were involved in the work of some clauses.
Amazon has had labor issues more than once or twice. In March this year, Amazon was collectively sued for occupying employees' rest and meal time. Later, employees complained that the number of times they went to the bathroom was restricted and that the management and control during the epidemic were not in place. Therefore, this has also led to a high rate of worker turnover at Amazon to a certain extent. In April this year, Amazon workers originally planned to form a union, but the votes were not passed in the end, and the union failed to be established.
Some experts said that the bill is innovative in terms of quota regulation formed by Amazon's so-called productivity measurement algorithm. Labor issues have not been completely resolved at Amazon. As Amazon continues to expand its business and market, it needs more labor, which will be accompanied by the accumulation of labor issues. Amazon quota bill |
