Cause of vibration of Shenzhen Huaqiangbei SEG Building found

At around 13:00 on May 18, 2021, the SEG Building in Huaqiangbei, Shenzhen , began to shake. The topic also became a hot search on Weibo, touching the hearts of thousands of netizens. Now, after more than two months of investigation and research by an expert group, the cause of the vibration of the SEG Building has finally been found out.

Today, relevant units and experts in Shenzhen said in an interview: Through a focused analysis of wind-induced vibrations and cumulative structural damage, the expert group believes that the coupling of wind-induced vortex-induced resonance of the mast and changes in the dynamic characteristics of the building and mast caused the felt vibration of the SEG Plaza Building.

In addition, experts also pointed out that the change in the dynamic characteristics of the mast is the main internal cause of the vibration of the SEG Building . The change occurred more than 20 years ago , but it did not take effect until May 18 this year. However, this does not affect the safety of the main structure, so the SEG Building can still be used safely .

It is reported that after the SEG Building vibrated on the 18th, all personnel in the building were evacuated quickly and safely, and the Shenzhen Fire and Public Security Departments also responded quickly. However, in the following two days, the building was suspected to have shaken twice again, causing panic among the people and netizens also talked about it.

Subsequently, SEG Building was closed on May 21 , and relevant experts entered the building for inspection. Monitoring data on SEG Building's vibration, tilt, settlement, etc. were released through official channels every day.

At present, the expert group said that SEG Building can still continue to be used, but in order to solve the problem of felt vibration of SEG Building , the mast removal project will be implemented soon to repair the local accumulated damage of the structure .

It is reported that the effective construction period of this rectification plan is about 32 days . If there are extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, typhoons, and high temperatures, the construction work will be stopped in a timely manner and the construction period will be postponed. In addition, in order to protect the lives and property of the people, the SEG Plaza Building and some surrounding roads will be closed during the demolition period.

Regarding the issue of how to accommodate merchants during the construction period, the person in charge of the Futian District Government said that they will continue to provide temporary business venues for merchants . Merchants with temporary business needs can apply to the SEG Plaza Building Management Office.
