As the saying goes, for every great product there is a cheap copy. However, due to the lack of R&D investment, these "low-end" products may have many potential risks.
Apple's electronic watch is a very classic product. It has been loved by many people since its release, but the price issue still discouraged some people.
As a result, a large number of "substitute" electronic watches have appeared on the market . According to a survey by Which?, a consumer rights protection organization, similar products are sold on platforms including Amazon, eBay, Wish and SHEIN.
After investigation, it was found that these products all have some security loopholes to a greater or lesser extent, such as excessive collection of user personal information, or lack of information protection functions when the watch is lost.
For many big brands, information protection is very important, and even the company itself cannot access the encrypted data. But for some small and medium-sized brands, cost is always the first priority, so many "unnecessary" functions can be saved. According to Lisa Barber, editor-in-chief of Which?, "We have found many knock-off smart watches and fitness trackers online that have serious security vulnerabilities and could be hacked."
“For many people, cheap tech products are a tempting option, especially in the context of a cost of living crisis. While consumers may save some money by buying these knockoffs, they are ultimately paying for their data and privacy.” In response, an eBay spokesperson said: "When Which? contacted us about this report, we reviewed the products in question and found that the majority did not violate our policies."
An Amazon spokesperson also said: " If customers have questions about the products they purchased, we encourage them to contact our customer service directly. In addition, we have removed several products from the shelves during our investigation. "
A spokesperson for SHEIN said in response to the incident: "We are still investigating. As a precaution, we have removed the relevant products from the shelves. Product safety has always been our top concern, and we will resolve this incident as soon as possible."
This is also a reminder for some sellers of electronic products. Because Europeans and Americans care very much about personal privacy, such issues will attract a lot of attention once exposed, and will have a great impact on the brand image and future development. Amazon Removed |
