Breaking through $1 billion! Goodwill's online sales in the US are strong

In the past year, due to the influence and promotion of the epidemic, many second-hand e-commerce platforms in the United States have achieved great achievements and development.

Goodwill sales top $1 billion

It is understood that Goodwill, the largest charity thrift store in North America , accounts for 1/3 of the sales of North America's second-hand retail industry. It not only has a large number of stores, but also has a variety of positioning innovations, making it one of the leading companies in North America's second-hand retail industry.

Recently, The NonProfit Times reported that Goodwill's online thrift store, shopgoodwill.com, generated a total of $500 million in sales between 1999 and September 2017. In addition, shopgoodwill.com has made another $500 million in the past few years. In 2020, its sales reached $171.3 million, an increase of 22% over the previous year. Currently, Goodwill's total sales have exceeded $1 billion.

Products offered on the Goodwill online platform include art, clothing, collectibles, designer clothing and accessories, electronics, jewelry, musical instruments, and more.

The online platform has more than 21 million unique page views per week and more than 2.4 million registered users. Once an item is sold, the organization that lists it on the site receives more than 90% of the sale price. During 2020 , six such outlets had annual sales of more than $5 million, while 48 had revenues of more than $1 million.

Younger generations are more interested in second-hand goods

“Younger generations are more focused on engaging with retailers or online retailers rather than just buying products,” said Nicole Suydam, president and CEO of Goodwill. “They want to have an impact on society through their actions. Younger generations are very interested in the concept of sustainability and believe that reusing items makes them feel like they are doing good for the world.

In addition, both Generation Z and Millennials prefer to buy sustainable products. First Insight data shows that among these consumer groups, 62% prefer second-hand products.

Piper Sandler conducted an evaluation survey on teenagers, and the results showed that young Americans buy more things in thrift stores and second-hand markets than in the past. Among them, about 46% of teenagers in high-income families surveyed by Piper Sandler said they have bought second-hand clothes.

This shows that young people are more interested in second-hand goods. Therefore, as young consumers pay more and more attention to sustainable development, second-hand goods may become a popular trend and have huge room for development.
