According to the latest published data, sellers in the United States and China failed to achieve significant sales growth during " Online Shopping Week " and " Double Eleven " , and consumers seem to be beginning to experience online shopping fatigue.
Data shows that from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, American consumers spent a total of $35.27 billion online , a 4% increase over last year .
However, this growth still exceeded that of the domestic Double Eleven, where sales only increased by 2.9%.
From 2014 to last year, Singles’ Day grew at an average annual rate of about 34 percent, compared with an average of 17 percent for U.S. online shopping weeks , according to consultancy Bain and Adobe Analytics.
Deborah Winswig, founder and CEO of CoreSight Research , called the U.S. Cyber Week sales a "Christmas miracle," considering that many retailers began offering holiday discounts as early as October. Amazon launched a Prime Day promotion as early as October . According to data from consulting firm Syntun, Chinese consumers spent about 934 billion yuan ( about 130.51 billion U.S. dollars) during the Singles' Day shopping festival this year . Citi analysts said that sales of Alibaba, China's largest e-commerce company, were only flat compared with last year , while sales of new short video e-commerce platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou achieved some growth.
In the United States, the deep discounts offered by major retailers gave consumers a reason to open their wallets and start spending. This year, nearly 197 million consumers participated in shopping activities between Black Friday and Cyber Monday , of which 130.2 million were online shoppers , an increase of 2% over last year .
Jane Hali, CEO of retail research firm Jane Hali & Associates , said she expects overall U.S. holiday sales this year to be flat compared to last year , adjusted for inflation .
The U.S. "cyber shopping week" includes Black Friday, an important holiday for Americans when families go out together and buy holiday gifts. Alexander Chernev , a professor of marketing at the Kellogg School of Management , said many people buy gifts on Black Friday so they can give them to relatives and friends before Christmas .
Singles' Day was initially an unofficial holiday in China , where some single people would "celebrate" themselves on this day . However, e-commerce giant Alibaba won over online shoppers with discounts and promotions on this day in 2009 .
According to Jane Hali & Associates, " Cyber Week " is just a small episode in the US holiday season , accounting for about 10% of total sales in the fourth quarter of this year .
Based on this forecast, it can be seen that research institutions are still very optimistic about US sales in the fourth quarter, and sellers still have many opportunities to boost their sales. USA Black Friday |
