eBay launches Black Friday promotion for used products

As eBay promised before, this year's Black Friday marketing is entirely focused on promotions for refurbished and second-hand items. It is reported that the main banner of eBay's website is also promoting its refurbished technology, second-hand sneakers and fashion items.

It is reported that a study by eBay UK found that 52% of consumers will buy second-hand or refurbished products during this year's holiday shopping season , and saving money is their biggest motivation for doing so (56%).

Murray Lambell, eBay UK general manager, said: "Black Friday has changed, but it's not too late to change. Black Friday was originally launched to help consumers save money before the holiday season, but now consumers have fallen into a state of consumption frenzy and buy just for the sake of buying."

"As consumers' shopping habits continue to change, cost of living and environmental issues have become issues they need to consider when shopping, so we have seen a sharp increase in sales of second-hand and refurbished products."

“We know there’s a better way to spend Black Friday together. We hope consumers think differently when shopping for Christmas or Black Friday this year – and if they start by buying a used or refurbished item or two, that’s a good start, giving a product a second life without it being destroyed.”

It is understood that the "refurbished" products on eBay have been professionally repaired and audited, and are basically no different from brand new products, but the prices are much cheaper.

Additionally, buying refurbished products is not only more cost-effective, it also extends the life of the item, keeps it out of landfill, and reduces its impact on the environment.

In addition to some daily necessities, eBay's second-hand item advertisements also mention some well-known brands, including the most popular Dyson hair care products, which are priced at 30% off the original price in the eBay Refurbished Center. The popular Dyson curling iron is also on sale now, saving up to £205 compared to the original price.

People familiar with the matter revealed that the 30% discount on Dyson products is subsidized by the eBay platform and the promotion will last until December 1, 2022.

It can be seen that eBay seems to have decided to return to its original intention and focus on the second-hand and refurbished market, rather than continuing to compete for market share with e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Walmart.
