The top 10 most popular retailers for the back-to-school season in the United States are announced, and Amazon's ranking is surprising!

Recently, JLL (Jones Lang LaSalle) released its latest survey report on the back-to-school season in the United States.

Data shows that the three most popular retailers for the 2022 back-to-school season in the United States are Walmart, Target and Amazon. When shopping during the back-to-school season, 63.5% of parents choose Walmart, 53.3% of parents choose Target , and 50% of parents choose Amazon.

The retailers ranked 4th to 10th are Old Navy, Staples, Dollar Tree, Macy's, Kohl's, Costco and Office Depot. However, it is worth noting that the popularity of these retailers is far behind the top three. Old Navy, which ranks fourth, is only chosen by 7.5% of parents.

The survey found that more than half of back-to-school shoppers will look for discounts and coupons , about 50% will reduce purchases and focus only on necessities, one-third will reuse existing products, and another 16% will buy second-hand products instead of new ones. In addition, free shipping is a decisive factor for consumers to choose online shopping during the back-to-school season .

James Cook, director of retail research at JLL , said American parents plan to use a variety of cost-saving methods to protect against the impact of inflation .

The survey shows that more than half of parents plan to reduce their back-to-school spending this year . 37.9% of consumers have a smaller back-to-school budget than last year, and 27.2% have a significantly smaller back-to-school budget. 31.8 % of consumers said their back-to-school budget would not be affected by inflation.

The survey shows that the average budget for back-to-school shopping in the United States this year is $339, compared with $322 last year . This year's back-to-school budget will increase by 5.4% . The main reason for the increase is the difference in consumers' response to inflation . Those consumers who are not affected by inflation have much higher back-to-school budgets than in 2021 .

It is important to note that the back-to-school expenses of each American family vary according to family income. Families with an income of less than $ 50,000 have a back-to-school budget that is 24.2% less than the average, while parents with an income of more than $ 150,000 have a back-to-school budget that is 60.2% more than the average .

Naveen Jaggi, president of retail consulting services at JLL, said : " Despite the current severe inflation , back-to-school spending by American families this year is likely to reach a record high. American parents need to prepare enough school supplies and clothes for their children in the upcoming new school term, and there is a strong shopping demand . "

In addition, sellers also need to pay attention to the shopping time and shopping choices of different consumer groups during the back-to-school season.

Most American parents will do their back-to-school shopping in July and August , which will drive sales growth in categories such as apparel and stationery. About 31.5 % of millennial consumers start shopping before July , and more than 7% of Generation Z consumers have completed their shopping. In addition, 34.2% of Generation X consumers are more likely to wait until August to do their back-to-school shopping compared to other consumers .

Most consumers prefer discount stores for back-to-school shopping, with 78.2% of American parents planning to shop at discount stores . 68.6 % of parents plan to visit e-commerce websites to get their shopping lists .

For sellers, in order to seize the opportunity of the back-to-school season, while deploying high-demand products, they can attract consumers through discount promotions and provide consumers with free delivery services. This year, American consumers are more willing to spend money than in previous years, and where they choose to spend depends entirely on the sales strategy of retailers.
