2022 Australian Online Shopping Report: Demand for multiple categories surges

Recently, Australia Post released the " Australian Online Shopping Report 2022" , which delves into the latest online shopping trends in Australia.

 

The report shows that in 2021, more than four-fifths of Australian households shopped online, and the amount of physical goods purchased online reached A$62.3 billion .

 

Online purchases in Australia increased by 23.4 % in 2021 compared to 2020, almost double the amount of online purchases in 2019 .

 

Online shopping spending in Australia accounted for 19.3% of total retail sales in 2021. The number of Australian households that made at least one online purchase in 2021 reached 9.2 million , and the number of Australian households that made at least one online purchase per month reached 5.4 million .

 

15.3% of Australian online shoppers are classified as "super shoppers" and make an online purchase at least once a week . Super shoppers account for 49% of all online sales .

 

It is worth mentioning that 93% of Australian online shoppers said their purchasing habits will remain the same or increase in 2022 .

 

Australia Post Group CEO and managing director Paul Graham said the epidemic has brought about a fundamental change in the way Australians live, work and shop, with more Australian households starting to shift from offline to online , whether buying clothing or daily necessities .

Due to the impact of the epidemic, 15 million Australians had travel restrictions throughout 2021 , so online shopping has become an important choice in Australians' lives.

 

The convenience of online shopping has led Australian shoppers to be more inclined to compare prices and choose a wider range of products .

 

In 2021, products in multiple categories in the Australian e-commerce market were hot-selling, including department stores, fashion, home and gardening, while the fastest-growing products were sports and leisure, women's clothing, footwear, baby and pet products, tools and gardening products, and sports and outdoor products.

 

In addition, in 2019, on average, each online shopper purchased products from 9 retailers, a number that increased to 15 in 2021. In addition, the shopping time of online shoppers has also changed, with more people now buying between 2pm and 5pm and fewer between 7pm and 10pm.

 

Looking at online sales in different regions, online sales in Australia's urban areas increased by 12.9% year-on-year in 2021 , while online sales in remote areas increased by 10.6 %.
