On Amazon, you often see some unknown products that are not only cheap but also have a near-perfect star rating, but there are very few negative reviews. Is it really because the product is impeccable? Of course not!
The reason for this is that some Amazon sellers will contact dissatisfied buyers to modify or delete their negative reviews in exchange for a refund or gift card. After doing so, the number of negative reviews that are unfavorable to the seller will be greatly reduced, thereby improving the overall average star rating of their store or brand .
Just in March of this year , New Yorker Katherine Scott bought an oil spray bottle with a good star rating on Amazon for cooking . However, after receiving the product, it was not as good as advertised, but the effect was extremely poor.
After giving a bad review, I kept receiving emails from the seller asking me to delete the bad review and being promised a full refund. The seller also said that if the buyer did not respond after receiving the email, he would continue to send related emails.
In order to delete the negative review, the seller later promised to refund twice the price of the product to deal with the matter. Ms. Scott reported this matter to Amazon. After two contacts, on April 16, Amazon customer service promised that the matter would be responded to within 48 hours. However, in reality, no one responded to her.
After being harassed by the seller until July this year , Ms. Scott called Amazon's hotline. Finally, Amazon told her by email that the case would be investigated, but Amazon could not disclose the results of the investigation.
The listing and its positive reviews remained live even after Ms. Scott complained. But after asking Amazon to review the situation in this column, the brand listing disappeared, and both the brand Auxtun and the seller HoHousstore no longer appear on Amazon.
This situation is not uncommon on the Amazon platform. In the kitchenware market alone, more than a dozen customers reported that they had been forced to modify negative reviews.
However, as we all know, this situation is against Amazon platform rules, and Amazon prohibits sellers from contacting customers through methods other than Amazon’s official channels . So, how do sellers contact customers away from Amazon’s attention and obtain buyers’ email addresses and other information?
It is understood that sellers may look up the customer 's name and mailing address in the sales records provided by Amazon and contact the buyer . There are even some third-party tools that can obtain the customer's shipping information and match it with a known email address.
According to foreign media reports, there are companies that provide email extraction services for Amazon sellers . They match buyers' names with contact information and get paid for it .
The Wall Street Journal has also reported that Amazon employees have been accused of accepting bribes from third-party sellers in exchange for information . Amazon said at the time that it would discipline any employees who violated company policies and install systems to limit and review what employees can access.
Based on the above situation, the editor reminds all sellers that it is understandable to want to improve their star ratings and boost product sales, but it is not advisable to contact buyers to get cash back and delete negative reviews. If you are not careful, you will be reported and even face the risk of being blocked.
