According to data from the NPD Group, in 2021, straight-leg jeans became the best-selling style, accounting for one-third of the women's jeans market revenue in 2021 , with sales reaching US$3.3 billion.
Maria Rugolo, an apparel industry analyst at NPD , said that the comfortable clothing trend accelerated by the epidemic has shifted the demand trend of jeans to loose styles, and the rise of various styles has given consumers of all ages and generations more variety and choices at the right time. Consumers are looking for some new styles.
It is understood that while skinny jeans remain the best-selling style among Millennials and Gen Z, they are the only style to see a revenue decline in 2021 compared to 2019, even as Baby Boomers increase their spending on skinny jeans.
In fact, according to data from NPD's Consumer Tracking Service, Baby Boomers accounted for 12% of all women's skinny jeans sold in the U.S. in 2021, an increase of 3 shares compared to 2019.
Last year, pent-up demand for jeans began to show up in sales trends as consumers felt more comfortable returning to offices and other social situations. Overall revenue for women's jeans increased 9% in 2021 compared to 2019.
