The French beauty market will exceed 2.6 billion euros in 2021, with growth in many categories

According to a survey by the research organization NPD Group , sales in the French beauty market increased by 9% in 2021 to 2.689 billion euros compared to 2020. Among them, the market share of physical stores was 84%, while online sales accounted for 16%.

Nevertheless, restrictions in 2021 have slowed down the recovery process, and the French beauty market has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. Sales in 2021 fell by 12% compared to 2019. However, there is a good sign that the growth rate of the beauty market accelerated in the second half of 2021 , with sales in the fourth quarter being the same as in the same period in 2019, and sales in the two weeks before Christmas hitting a record high.

Perfume is an important driving force for the growth of the beauty market. Sales in 2021 increased by 11% compared to 2020. The fastest growing product is home fragrance , as people spend more time at home. In addition, consumers are also keen to buy high- end perfumes and concentrated perfumes. In addition to personal use, perfumes are also given as gifts. According to NPD surveys, perfumes are still the first choice for most people to give as gifts during major holidays such as Mother's Day and Christmas.

In addition, as people spend more time at home, they are becoming more interested in body care. Compared with 2020, sales of care products increased by 5% in 2021 , and sales volume increased by 17 % . As for facial products, skin care products , sprays, facial essential oils, exfoliating products and makeup removers have resumed growth, with sales increasing by double digits compared to 2020. And NPD said that consumers prefer cheaper products and more affordable well-known brands.

In addition to skin care products, cosmetics sales also showed signs of rising in 2021, with sales increasing by 5% compared to 2020. Because people still need to wear masks, consumers focus on eye and nail products. These products achieved double-digit growth in 2021. However , it should be noted that products such as foundation and lipstick also showed signs of recovery at the end of last year. This seems to suggest that cosmetics will usher in strong growth in 2022.

Hair care products have also been favored by consumers. Driven by factors such as promotional packages, sales of hair care products in 2021 increased by 43% compared with the previous year .
