With 8,000 Chinese sellers pouring in, can Walmart replace Amazon?

According to Bloomberg, starting in April last year , Amazon kicked out tens of thousands of Chinese sellers who forged customer reviews from its platform, and these banned sellers have been looking for new ways to re-enter the US market .

Due to the difficulties in building an independent website , the best option for many people is to open a store on Walmart's e-commerce platform , which has the closest logistics support and online traffic to Amazon in the US market .

According to estimates by market research firm Marketplace Pulse, Walmart added about 8,000 sellers from China from March 2021 to mid-January 2022, accounting for 14% of its total new merchants during the same period, and almost all international sellers are from China. As of the end of 2021, the number of Chinese sellers was about one-seventh of Walmart's total merchants .

Walmart became the choice of some sellers by chance . It is understood that Walmart began to actively attract non-US merchants to its e - commerce platform in early 2021. Soon after, Amazon began to vigorously rectify the problems of "small cards" and fake orders, and Walmart became an alternative platform.

Foreign industry experts said that Walmart welcomes sellers to its platform to increase the variety and quantity of products on its platform to compete with Amazon . Therefore, Walmart is not very strict on the issue of false reviews and fake orders.

But some senior industry insiders believe that this means Walmart is likely to face the same problems as Amazon in the future , and will eventually increase penalties for violations like Amazon .

It is understood that Walmart has taken a series of measures to attract more sellers to its platform. Starting in 2021, Walmart began to increase investment in its own WFS service (similar to Amazon's FBA) to provide warehousing, distribution and after-sales support for Chinese sellers.

Even so, Walmart still has a relatively high threshold for sellers to enter. In addition to Walmart, many Chinese sellers have also entered platforms such as AliExpress and Newegg. Some Chinese sellers said that compared with Amazon, the sales rules of other platforms are not so strict, and they will also consider other platforms to replace Amazon.
