According to Singapore media reports, since December last year, a scam involving a fake mobile application called "Shopee Pay" has resulted in at least 11 victims being defrauded of approximately S$53,000.
The Singapore police said in a release last Friday that this is a new type of job scam that invites victims to sell products on a fake mobile app called "Shopee Pay" in exchange for a commission.
The "Shopee Pay" mentioned here has nothing to do with the e-commerce platform Shopee . Shopee also stated that its e-wallet function Shopee Pay can only be accessed through its official app.
According to the Singapore police, victims are usually introduced to the job scam by friends or exposed to social media platforms . The victims then download the fake " Shopee Pay " mobile application through the provided URL .
Then, to meet job “ assessment requirements , ” victims were instructed to deposit funds into their “ Shopee Pay ” accounts by purchasing cryptocurrency and transferring it to a specified cryptocurrency wallet address in the app .
In some cases, victims were also asked to transfer cryptocurrencies to the scammers’ cryptocurrency wallets via bank transfers or PayNow peer-to-peer transactions .
When these transactions are completed , the fake app will prompt the victim that the work assessment has been completed and can continue to work to earn commissions . After that, the victim is tricked into adding items to the shopping cart and paying with funds in his account. The " commission " earned by the victim will also be displayed in the app.
In some cases, victims were told that the Monetary Authority of Singapore had frozen their " Shopee Pay " accounts and that further top-ups were required before they could withdraw the commissions from their accounts .
The victims only realized they had been scammed when they eventually found that they were unable to withdraw the commission shown in their “ Shopee Pay ” accounts .
While confirming that "Shopee Pay" has nothing to do with the e-commerce platform Shopee , the Singapore police also reminded the general public:
Don't accept job offers that say " maximum reward for minimum effort "; Do not download apps from unverified sources ; Do not send money or conduct cryptocurrency transactions with anyone you do not know or have not met in person .
The editor here also reminds readers to keep their eyes open and carefully identify when looking for a job. Sellers should also pay more attention to industry-related information in daily operations and avoid being fooled by scammers. E-commerce platform operations Scams Counterfeit Cross-border |
