Identity verification is very common around us. It is a way to verify that a certain matter is operated by oneself. However, recently some criminals have used this method to defraud online sellers.
According to the latest news from foreign media, fraudsters have designed a new scam using Google authentication , and sellers should be highly vigilant about such information. It is reported that when sellers list items for sale , they will also publish their real phone numbers , which gives scammers an opportunity to take advantage.
The scammers will first contact the seller via text message or email , claiming that in order to ensure the seller's identity is legitimate and not deceived, they will send the seller a verification code from Google to confirm that it is the seller himself.
Next, the seller will be asked to verify the number through a voice call or text message. The scammer will use the verification code to set up a Google Voice account in the seller's name and verify it with the seller's real phone number and other information previously provided .
Once the account is successfully verified , the scammer can use the Google Voice account to defraud other victims. When these scams are discovered, the first people to be involved are the sellers who are the victims . It is reported that Google Voice is a free service that allows users to set up phone numbers for making calls and sending text messages .
In addition, according to foreign media reports, scammers can also use the authentication code provided by the seller to access and take over the victim's Gmail account .
According to reports, the US FBI has issued a reminder to remind sellers not to share their Google verification codes with others and only communicate with buyers and sellers in person . If a transaction is required , make sure to use a legitimate payment processor and do not disclose your email address to buyers or sellers who conduct business over the phone .
It is worth noting that many online sellers ignore such reminders because they are eager to sell their products and expand their sales channels, thus falling into the trap set by scammers.
It is indeed a good thing to be able to promote products on more platforms and through more means, but ignoring the risks behind it will not be worth the loss. Sellers should be vigilant if they receive such messages or calls. Seller Authentication scam |
