Will American fashion make a comeback?

After a downturn during the epidemic, fashion apparel may make a comeback in the US market in 2022.

During the epidemic, the US clothing market suffered a major blow. In April 2020, at the beginning of the epidemic , the overall sales of the US clothing market fell by 79%. Among them, the sales of leggings, jeans, khaki pants and fashion pants plummeted.

But at the same time, the purchase of sweatpants has increased by 80%. Due to the stay-at-home order, people spend most of their time at home, and comfortable sweatpants and loose-fitting clothing have become popular. Fashion magazine GQ said: "In the minds of Americans, sweatpants have replaced blue jeans."

Not only in the United States, fashion industry consultants NPD Group said in October that the overall sales share of activewear and comfort wear in the Canadian apparel market has increased from 25% in 2019 to around 33% this year.

But this year, as public places reopened and people began to go out to work and attend social events, the demand for formal and fashionable clothing increased, and sweatpants returned to their supporting role status.

Sweatpants are no longer popular among the public, and consumers are paying attention to more vibrant , youthful and even luxurious fashion styles, which is in stark contrast to the situation during the epidemic quarantine .

As people spend more time in the public , the trend of loose clothing that is comfortable will be replaced by more structured and fitted styles. Bright colors, puff sleeves and unique, novel styles will become the new fashion.

In addition, industry insiders say that thick-soled sneakers such as dad shoes that were popular in previous years will be replaced by chic mules or more fashionable leather sneakers in 2022.

Secondhand clothing has also gained popularity, with 42% of consumers saying they plan to spend more on secondhand clothing than any other retail category over the next five years, according to a survey by resale platform ThredUp. Millennials and Gen Z are the most likely to say so.

Yienjun would also like to remind sellers to pay more attention to fashion trends in the US market and choose products wisely.
