Nearly 90% of Russian pet owners will prepare New Year gifts for their pets

Recently, a video of a cat climbing curtains has been widely circulated on major social platforms.

It is understood that the curtains in the pet owner's home are climbed by the four cats every day. The curtains have changed from cotton and linen to tassel curtains. The owner said that they parkour on the curtains every day and no longer need cat climbing frames.

It has become a trend to prepare a variety of toys for pets, such as the cat climbing frame mentioned above, but not every pet is as "dramatic" as the cat in the video.

So, as the New Year approaches, what gifts do consumers like to buy for their pets?

Recently, Mars Petcare , a leading company in the pet industry , released a survey.

The survey shows that in Russia , almost all pet owners ( 91% ) said they would celebrate the arrival of the New Year 2022 with their pets , and 86% of pet owners would prepare New Year gifts for their pets. Among them, pet snacks and pet toys are the most popular, accounting for 68% and 46% respectively . The second most popular are pet houses, pet sofas, pet carriers, leashes and scratching posts.

Compared with Europe and the United States, sellers pay less attention to Russia, but that doesn't mean it is not important.

According to a survey released by Mars in April, the number of pets in Russian households has increased by 23%, or 12 million, to 63.5 million in the past three years. In 2020, the number of cats was 40.8 million (+25%), and the number of dogs was 22.6 million (+21%).

The study also showed that 59% of Russian households now have pets, an increase of 5 percentage points from 2017. Today, 70.4 million people over the age of 14 in Russia are pet owners.

And more and more Russians consider their pets as family members ( 44% of cat owners and 34% of dog owners), friends (24% and 36% respectively) or children (19% and 15%). Only 12% of cat owners and 14% of dog owners consider their pets to be just animals.

As people value their pets more and more, they will spend more and more money on them, which has given rise to the "pet economy". Sellers can pay more attention to the latest trends in pet supplies to meet market demand and gain profits.
