German e-commerce sales exceeded 99 billion euros, and consumer satisfaction reached 96.3%

According to foreign media reports, German e-commerce has seen strong growth in 2021, with total sales of e-commerce products reaching 99.1 billion euros, an increase of 19% compared to 2020. In 2020, Germany's e-commerce was worth about 83.3 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 14.6%. If digital services are included, the total value of e-commerce in 2021 will even reach 107.1 billion euros.

According to e-commerce association Bevh, the significant growth in total e-commerce sales in Germany shows that e-commerce has become "normal" in the country. The pandemic continues to put society and trade in a state of emergency, but digital trade is restoring some of the pre-pandemic normalcy through a secure supply of goods.

President of Bevh   Gero Furchheim said that when the epidemic first broke out, e-commerce development peaked. Now its growth is stabilizing at a high level, which shows that everyone has made online shopping a daily routine and discovered its benefits, such as more choices and better services. For consumers and retailers, trade without e-commerce is unimaginable.

According to the survey, 96.3% of consumers were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with their orders. In addition, 40.9% of respondents said they had ordered online more than once in the past seven days.

In 2021, 40% of e-commerce sales came from mobile devices, and mobile e-commerce sales increased by 56.5% to 39.9 billion euros. In 2020, mobile devices generated sales of 28.1 billion euros, accounting for one-third of overall e-commerce sales.

This also shows that mobile commerce is becoming more and more popular among German consumers and is on the rise. In two-thirds of cases, people aged 14 to 29 use smartphones or tablets to make online purchases. Search engines and online stores are still important information channels for making purchase decisions, followed by social media and applications.

Direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales increased significantly in the third quarter of 2021. Multichannel retailers saw sales increase by 16.7% in 2021; pure internet players saw an even more significant increase of 18.4%.

Among them, groceries, drugstore goods and pet supplies are increasingly popular online products, with sales increasing by 36.4%. It is worth noting that these categories grew by 40.9% in 2020. This shows that the growth of individual products has stabilized in 2021 and is slightly above the long-term average.

The e-commerce association Bevh expects sales from digital transactions to increase further in 2022, with a 12% increase and total sales exceeding 110 billion euros.
