Amazon's GMV to reach $600 billion in 2021

Amazon's GMV to reach $600 billion in 2021

It is understood that in 2021, $600 billion worth of goods were sold on Amazon. The gross merchandise volume (GMV), including sales on Amazon itself and the marketplace, has doubled in three years , with most of the growth coming from the third-party market. From this point of view, it is still the majority of third-party sellers who have made a greater contribution to the growth of GMV on the Amazon platform .

Marketplace Pulse estimates based on information disclosed by Amazon that Amazon's sales (also known as first-party sales) reached US$210 billion in 2021 , an increase of 11% year-on-year, and sales in the third-party market reached US$390 billion, an increase of 30% year-on-year.

Global GMV totaled $600 billion, up 22% year-over-year. It more than doubled in three years from $277 billion in 2018. Although Amazon's growth slowed significantly in 2021 compared to 2020 - its growth was halved , Amazon's GMV still grew by more than $100 billion.

Data shows that the third-party market contributed more than 80% of GMV growth. Its sales have almost doubled in just two years - from $200 billion in 2019 to $390 billion in 2021. For many years, the market has been growing faster than Amazon's first-party sales (it accounted for nearly 65% of GMV; ten years ago in 2011, it was 38%).

Although the GMV estimate is only a rough calculation, it does not refer to any other data, so the data should be an approximate estimate of Amazon's size .

Amazon added more GMV in 2021 than Walmart and eBay each added to their combined global e-commerce sales. In the three years that Amazon doubled its GMV, it also more than doubled its fulfillment network and added more than a million employees to 1.6 million.

Despite all the problems Amazon has with consumers, sellers, competitors, and governments, it has somehow kept the flywheel turning. All things being equal, it will reach $1 trillion in GMV in less than five years.

Although the performance of many Amazon sellers has been affected to varying degrees in 2021, according to data officially disclosed by Amazon, the overall strength of the platform is still increasing.
