Delivery sustainability becomes a greater concern for online shoppers

The 2021 IPC Cross-Border E-Commerce Shopper Survey Report shows that 44% of e-commerce consumers worldwide say they have changed their online shopping behavior due to concerns about sustainability.

Of these, 49% of participants said they want cross-border parcels to be carbon neutral . 70% of consumers said they want packaging materials to be recyclable, 65% want packaging to be reusable, and 50% want packaging to be biodegradable. More than half said they want e-tailers to provide clear information, such as how to recycle packaging when shopping online .

Amazon, AliExpress and eBay are the largest e-commerce platforms in the world. Amazon accounts for 26% of consumers shopping online , AliExpress accounts for 19% and eBay accounts for 10%.

Wish and eBay both lost considerable cross-border market share between 2019 and 2021, but Amazon gained market share in several countries . Amazon is most popular in Luxembourg ( 59%), Austria (54%), and India (51%), while AliExpress is most popular in Russia (74%), Lithuania (51%), and Poland (43%). In contrast, eBay has the highest percentage of buyers in Australia (33%), the United Kingdom (28%), and Croatia (24%).

The survey shows that consumers have maintained regular online shopping amid the pandemic , with 22% of consumers shopping online at least once a week. Overall , 79% of consumers tend to shop online once a month, continuing the trend of e-commerce becoming the preferred shopping method.

Data shows that consumers are generally satisfied with delivery , but some will return cross-border packages. When surveying participants about the acceptable time for online shopping , 17% of consumers think 2 to 3 days , and 16% think 4 to 5 days. Compared with 2020, the delivery speed in 2021 has increased.

46 % of respondents said they were very satisfied with the speed of package delivery. However , in 2021 , the return rate of e-commerce shopping items also rose to 14%, with consumers in the United States (27%), Australia (25%) and the United Kingdom (24%) returning the most.

The delivery speed of the package can sometimes even become an important factor affecting consumers' shopping decisions. I hope sellers can pay attention to such issues.
