Towards a new journey: Facebook will shut down facial recognition feature

Days after its rebranding, Facebook announced plans to delete the facial biometric data collected and stored by the social platform on billions of its users .

On Tuesday, Facebook 's renamed Meta said it would shut down its facial recognition system and delete the recognition templates used to match faces to photos and videos . Meta will no longer provide facial recognition services to users.

It is reported that Facebook first introduced facial recognition technology in 2010. The feature automatically matches user names and photos . At the same time, the feature is automatically enabled when users log in , which also explains how the system has billions of facial recognition data .

According to Facebook's vice president of artificial intelligence, Jerome Pesenti , facial recognition technology will continue to be a powerful tool in the future for people to verify their identities and prevent fraud and impersonation . Although the technology may be helpful in specific situations, people need to look at the issue more comprehensively.

Pesenti mentioned that it was precisely because of the uncertainty of facial recognition technology in the current environment that the subsequent threats posed by this feature may be greater than its value that the company decided to limit Meta 's facial recognition function .

It is understood that in the United States, many proposals to regulate online privacy are still hypothetical, especially at the federal legal level, where existing laws may complicate the application of facial recognition technology . In addition, regulations including the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) may cause huge economic losses to technology companies.

Earlier this year, Facebook was ordered to pay $ 650 million for using facial recognition systems to collect user information without the consent of users in Illinois . Clearview AI, a company that provides facial recognition technology, is also facing a lawsuit from California BIPA.

Facebook 's decision to abandon the facial recognition system is an important move after the company reshaped its brand . The renamed Meta is repositioning the platform as a platform worthy of users' trust in the next Internet era . This will be a brand new challenge for Meta!
