Amazon ranks sixth in the Dutch e-commerce market

Amazon ranks sixth in the Dutch e-commerce market

Every year, the Dutch magazine Twinkle ranks local e-commerce platforms. According to the latest findings, the six largest online platforms in the Netherlands in 2020 are the same as the previous year . Bol.com still has the largest local market share , followed by Coolblue and Albert Heijn. The difference is that Albert Heijn is rapidly narrowing the gap between itself and the first place , which was 400 million euros before and is now only 190 million euros .

Following the top ten are Zalando, wehkamp, Amazon, Jumbo, Picnic, de Bijenkorf, and HelloFresh, with Amazon only ranking sixth locally.

Among them, About You and H&M did not enter the top 10 this year, and online supermarket Picnic and meal delivery company HelloFresh entered the top 10 instead. Picnic 's ranking is expected to improve, with sales exceeding 400 million euros this year .

By category, home and garden categories grew fastest last year, especially garden centers and hardware stores. This year, there are as many as 70 home and garden stores on the list , compared with about 50 in the past few years. In addition, the food category also performed well. In addition to Picnic and HelloFresh in the top 10 , the online supermarket Crisp ranked 38th .

Overall, the top 250 online stores had a combined turnover of 20.9 billion euros, equivalent to around 1,200 euros per Dutch resident . In 2019, online sales were still 900 euros per resident . This is an unprecedented increase of no less than 45%.

If we go back further, sales in the Dutch online store have even doubled since 2017. This sales growth is also reflected in last year's closing price: at €11 million, it was €3.5 million more than last year's Twinkle 100 edition.

Among the reasons for the rapid growth, the epidemic is an undeniable factor. The editor-in-chief of the survey magazine said: "The impact of the epidemic on sales cannot be underestimated. It has caused changes in our online purchasing behavior, which is clearly reflected in this list. For example, four food sellers appeared in the top 10 of Twinkle100 for the first time , which is twice as many as last year . "

The Netherlands is a small market in Europe. If sellers are considering it, they can refer to local platforms.
