French beauty products online sales increased 34% in the first half of the year

As countries gradually ease their epidemic prevention and control measures, more and more consumers are starting to go out, and sales of clothing and beauty products are also rising.

 

According to the latest data released by the NPD Group , from January to the end of August 202, the value of the French high-end beauty market increased by 6% compared with the same period last year , with total sales reaching 1.327 billion euros . The French beauty products market is showing clear signs of recovery.

 

It is reported that the growth in beauty product sales is mainly due to the development of e-commerce. From the beginning of this year to August, due to the restrictions on in-store epidemics, sales of French beauty products in stores increased by only 1% compared with the same period in 2020. In terms of online sales , sales in the first eight months of this year increased by 34% compared with 2020 .

 

Perfume is the fastest growing category in the French Select Beauty market . Sales of perfumes increased by 10% in the first eight months of 2021 compared to the previous year . At the same time , sales of boxed perfumes, eau de toilette, perfume extracts and home fragrances all increased by more than double digits .

 

The skin care category has also grown compared to the same period last year. As of August this year, sales of skin care products increased by 2% and sales increased by 16%. It is worth mentioning that the price of skin care products has dropped by an average of 5 euros as consumers tend to choose lower-priced products .

 

Masks are still a must for going out. Therefore, the cosmetics industry is still struggling , with sales of cosmetics products falling 2% in the first eight months of this year compared with the same period last year. However, cosmetics products in certain market segments still perform well , such as eye makeup products that cannot be blocked by masks, which have achieved double-digit growth in sales .

 

Mathilde Lion, European beauty expert at The NPD Group, commented: “ Beauty consumers have shown flexibility in their purchasing methods in 2021, returning to stores while continuing to shop online . We are pleased to see growth in the summer beauty market resume compared to 2019. We also expect to see good momentum in the hair and body care sectors in 2021.
