Amazon plans to monitor employees' computer operations

Recently, according to foreign media reports, Amazon will monitor employees' keystrokes to combat data theft and protect company privacy.

This is not the first time that Amazon has emphasized the protection of company information and data. As early as 2018, Amazon had the problem of employee theft. In order to seek personal gain, some employees provided customers with internal sales indicators and reviewers' email addresses, as well as services such as deleting negative reviews and replying to disabled Amazon accounts.

Amazon employees provided internal data and other confidential information, primarily with the help of middlemen, that could provide illegal shortcuts for independent merchants selling goods on the site, according to sellers who provided and purchased the data at the time.

Ultimately, Amazon tried to eradicate bribery and information theft by adjusting the roles of executives at its subsidiaries, but the results were not ideal.

A recent document published by Amazon argues that keyboard and mouse monitoring is needed to combat several different threats. The document claims that based on manual audits, the Amazon security team found four cases of impersonating employees to access Amazon customer data.

Although Amazon said in the filing that it had considered deploying a solution to capture all of an employee’s keystrokes, the company appears to be more interested in using the tool than in recording exactly what employees type or monitoring communications.

Amazon will use a product from cybersecurity firm BehavioSec to monitor its employees . Rather than collecting information about what employees type , it collects "behavior ," using biometric data to monitor for unusual behavior. For example, if an employee types much faster than usual, that could indicate to Amazon that their account has been hacked using a bot and is stealing customer data en masse.

Amazon has no choice but to use this method to prevent data theft. The development of cross-border e-commerce relies on the Internet, and data is the top priority on the Internet. In addition, due to the raging epidemic, working from home and remote work are rigid requirements. In the future, Amazon may deploy more work on data protection.

But while Amazon monitors employees to protect the company's privacy, is it also violating the privacy of employees? This approach is only a temporary solution and not a fundamental solution. The impact of the epidemic on the Internet deserves our careful consideration of information security issues.
