Three recalls in three months! Sellers of this type of product should beware

Recently, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Plant Guru recalled 25,600 bottles of essential oil products sold on the Amazon platform due to improper packaging.

The recalled products lacked child-resistant packaging

The recalled products include wintergreen essential oil, birch essential oil, headache relief essential oil and deep moisturizing essential oil. Among them, headache relief essential oil is divided into roller bottles and glass bottles, and the other products are all packaged in glass bottles. These products were sold on Amazon, eBay and Plant Guru websites between March 2018 and February 2021.

The essential oil products allegedly contain methyl salicylate, a chemical often used in care products that poses a risk of poisoning if swallowed by young children. Therefore, the Poison Prevention Packaging Act requires that any product containing methyl salicylate must be packaged in child-resistant packaging. Even though there have been no reports of injuries, the product was removed from shelves.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in the recall notice that consumers should immediately stop using the recalled essential oils and store the products in a safe place away from children. Consumers can call The Plant Guru to get a full refund for the roller bottle product, and consumers who purchase other essential oils can get a free child safety cap.

Previously, many companies recalled products for the same reason.

In the past three months, in addition to Plant Guru, two other companies have had to recall some of their essential oil products for the same reason.

On April 1, 2021, dōTERRA recalled approximately 1.3 million units of Deep Blue, PastTense, and Deep Blue Touch essential oils because the products, which contain methyl salicylate, lacked child-resistant packaging.

Just one week later, on April 8, GEO recalled approximately 220 bottles of GEO Wintergreen organic essential oil and GEO Alleviate organic essential oil blend, both of which contain methyl salicylate, also due to the lack of child-resistant packaging.

Here, sellers are reminded that when choosing products, they must carefully understand the local product sales regulations. If you find that your products have similar problems, you should contact the manufacturer as soon as possible.
