eBay to cease operations in Spain on July 1st?

According to Spanish news reports, eBay will close its site in Spain on July 1, and the Spanish market business will be managed by eBay's European Dublin team.

After learning the news, Ecommerce News also contacted eBay officials and received the following statement:

After investigating eBay's business organization in the Spanish market, the company has decided to close the site in Spain. We know that this decision will have an impact on our team, and we have also conducted joint negotiations in order to reach an agreement that is beneficial to both the company and our employees. We want to assure Spanish sellers and buyers that eBay does not intend to leave the Spanish market and will continue to provide the best service to Spain, just like other European markets.

The above news shows that eBay is preparing to cut costs in Spain. This incident will first have a direct impact on eBay's 19 Spanish employees.

eBay's main advantage in entering the Spanish market was its auction system and the booming second-hand market. Through payment methods such as Apple Pay and PayPal, anyone can become a seller and buy or sell second-hand goods, so the number of users in Spain has gradually increased. However, in recent statistics, eBay was not selected as one of the top five local e-commerce platforms, and the most popular e-commerce platform is still Amazon.

In terms of the e-commerce market, although it is not as good as Germany, the United Kingdom and France, Spain still has great potential. It is one of the leading markets in Southern Europe and one of the 13 largest e-commerce markets in the world. In 2020, the revenue from e-commerce reached 21 billion US dollars, an increase of 24%. With the rapid development of the e-commerce industry, Spaniards are more willing to consume online. According to statistics, Spaniards spend an average of 6 hours on the Internet every day. Coupled with the continuous emergence of new markets, I believe there will be greater development potential in the future.

Recently, eBay sold its Korean market for US$3.9 billion and has now closed its Spanish site. It is still unknown what changes will happen next.
