Recently, e-commerce service provider Pattern conducted a shopping behavior survey on 1,000 Germans and released the "Online Shopper Report" . The report shows that in the past year, the most popular shopping platform in Germany is Amazon .
In addition, according to data provided by the German E-Commerce and Mail Order Association , online sales in Germany increased by 14.6% in 2020 , with revenue mainly coming from the Amazon platform, which further confirms Amazon's popularity in Germany.
Regarding the frequency of online shopping on Amazon, 92% of respondents said that they had shopped on Amazon at least once in 2020 , 36% had increased their shopping frequency on Amazon, and almost half ( 46%) had significantly increased their online shopping frequency. In addition, the proportion of Germans who shopped on Amazon for the first time in 2020 was 32%.
It is worth noting that Amazon is also very popular among the elderly. Research shows that among the elderly over 65, 85% have shopped on Amazon , compared to only 77% of young people aged 25-34 . This shows how closely the elderly in Germany keep up with the trend of the times. It is recommended that merchants carefully select products and develop the elderly market.
Pattern also investigated the reasons why Germans choose Amazon for online shopping. 41% were attracted by the low prices online, 37% said Amazon's delivery was faster, and 36% thought that the Amazon platform page was simpler and easier to operate.
Regarding favorite shopping categories, the survey pointed out that 31% of consumers would buy skin care products and cosmetics on Amazon , while the proportions for buying hair care products and snacks were 30% and 28% respectively.
Not all Germans who open Amazon do so to shop. They are more likely to compare prices ( 38 % ) , search for products not available in the store ( 57% ) , or look for information and reviews about the product ( 36% ).
In addition, Amazon's Amazon Prime has a good reputation among customers. In terms of subscription ratio, more than half ( 58%) of the respondents are already members of Amazon Prime subscription , and another 12% said they may become members this year. In terms of subscription age distribution, 70% of people in the 25-34 age group have subscriptions, but only 37% of people over 65 use the service.
In this regard, Torsten Schäfer, Pattern's country manager in Germany , said: A wide range of product categories, high subscription levels and ultra-fast delivery speeds are crucial to maintaining customer loyalty. We will continue to improve and make Amazon a one-stop shopping platform that satisfies consumers of all ages.
