Survey shows that Americans' monthly impulse purchases increased by 51%

According to an annual survey commissioned by Slickdeals, Americans spend an average of $276 on impulse purchases per month, up from $183 per month in April 2020, a 51% increase in Americans' monthly impulse purchases .

The survey of 2,000 U.S. online shoppers , designed to examine the impulse spending habits of a representative sample of online shoppers , showed that a year into the pandemic, Americans are still impulsively buying major necessities : food/groceries (48%), household goods (42%), clothing (40%) and coffee (33%).

62% of respondents said they felt happy after an impulse purchase, and the study also found that two-thirds of impulse purchases occurred while using a smartphone in bed.

While people still prefer online shopping (53% in 2020, 41% in 2021), 11% more people are returning to physical stores this year than last year (22% in 2020, 33% in 2021).

In 2020, 75% of Americans said they would not make a purchase if they had to pay for shipping. This year, only 67% felt that way.

However, 65% of people have had to be more vigilant about the deliveries they receive over the past year , with half (51%) having more parcels and deliveries stolen this year than ever before.

Two-thirds of respondents said they would continue to shop online after the pandemic, compared with 71% last year .

Signs of economic stability are also evident. Nearly half (45%) say they would be willing to use their stimulus money for impulse purchases. When asked the same question last year, only 36% thought it was appropriate to use stimulus money in this way.

This applies especially to holiday shopping, where concerns about spending have decreased by 10% since last year .

Tronier added: “Contrary to conventional wisdom, our research continues to show that impulse buying can be linked to saving money. The Slickdeals community connects millions of real people to find the best deals at the best prices, which means that even if you don’t plan to buy everyday items like laundry detergent or coffee at a given time, stocking up at the right price can ultimately help your budget.

Slickdeals is a shopping social platform where 12 million users interact and share the latest online shopping deals and coupons . According to Alexa, Slickdeals is consistently ranked among the top 100 most visited websites in the United States.

From this, it can be seen that even if the impulse purchases of online shoppers increase, they will still be more inclined to save money strategies.
