According to a bevh survey, German consumers spent an average of 1,000 euros in online stores in 2020. To further understand the impact of different factors on people's online shopping, the consumer forum mydealz conducted a questionnaire survey of 2,000 consumers in the UK, France and Germany.
The survey results show that 84% of respondents do not mind labeling themselves as " bargain hunters " , and many people pay special attention to price when shopping online. In terms of age, 86 % of Germans aged 25-34 consider themselves bargain hunters, and this proportion is as high as 85% among those aged 35-44 . In contrast, the proportion of bargain hunters among the elderly aged 55-64 is only 70%. In terms of gender , women are more likely to be bargain hunters, at 85%, while men are 84%.
When shopping online, low prices are not the only factor that motivates consumers to buy. According to a mydealz survey, 21.6% of Germans consider price as a shopping criterion; 17.3% of Germans believe that "product quality" is the criterion for their decision whether to buy; 13.4% of people pay attention to "product reviews", and 10% of German consumers will listen to the reviews of editorial media such as newspapers and magazines .
Cross-border merchants are flourishing in Europe, and in the process of looking for bargains, many consumers will specifically shop in foreign online stores. According to surveys, 85% of Germans have ordered things from foreign online stores , while the proportions in France and the UK are 82% and 76% respectively . Therefore, German consumers are more inclined to "cross-border shopping" than French or British people .
In Germany, 88% of respondents said they had ordered from a foreign merchant at least once. Among those aged 35-44 , 90 % of Germans had participated in "cross-border shopping" , while among those aged 65 and above , this proportion was only 67% . However, there are not many people who frequently shop online across borders. Among the people in Germany, only 14.6% have shopped online across borders more than five times a year .
For those who have never participated in cross-border shopping, 40.3% of the respondents said they did not see the right price and were still waiting ; 46% were worried about paying high tariffs when shopping online . In addition , in view of Brexit, 47.6% of British consumers were worried about high tariffs .
Among the popular Chinese product categories in Germany, the top five are electronics ( 50.4% ) , fashion ( 40.7%) , household goods ( 21.5%) , toys (17.5%) and video games (16%) .
In addition, the proportion of Germans who choose to shop in Chinese online stores is 19.2% , while the proportions who choose to shop in Spanish and British online stores are 19.2% and 34.9% respectively .
